Why Personal Budget Software Does More Than You Think

Freedom is part of what you get with control of your finances. That means fewer worries and fewer hassles. There are several ways to achieve such. Personal budget software is one tool that may help. Two inexpensive options are up for consideration.

Some of the best software for budget success is actually free. One free leader is the online version of Quicken. Why free? The software contains affiliate links and ads. You buy, they earn. You don’t have to buy anything though. Here’s why this will work well for you.

The online system lets you look at all your checking, savings, credit card and investment accounts together in one place. Skip the bookkeeping. It all gets updated automatically online. That does mean the system must interact with your accounts. Though most accounts work with that, some don’t.

Then too the Mint system helps with budget setting and tracking and built-in calculators as well as video tutorials. You get reports and charts to help track spending and compare your spending to your budget. But what about something that’s not online?

Many accounting packages are mostly about bookkeeping and not about budgets. One mostly budget program is the You Need A Budget (YNAB) Pro package. Most reviews of the YNAB program are widely positive. The objective of this program is control of spending with a specific plan.

But the detractors maintain that the software itself is a tweaked spreadsheet that only really works as a budget tool and not as a replacement for a real accounting system. But if perhaps this isn’t the first time you’ve tried to make a budget work, realize that the approach here seems to have worked for many people where in many cases other approaches or programs have resulted in no progress.

Microsoft Money is now gone but Quicken lives in several versions.

The entry level Quicken Starter Edition may be best skipped. You don’t get loan tracking except for credit cars. Investment tracking is missing too. That means no mortgage tracking and no 401K either. A better choice is the Quicken Deluxe.

There is a quite steep learning curve too. Easy is not the right description for the Quicken software. Though it does offer lots of features and it remains the leader in personal finance software.

Check and see what reviewers say. It’s not so easy and maybe that’s a surprise to many. Sadly, part of that probably just stems from the power of the package. It’s just difficult to do many complicated functions in a simple manner.
